What to Take Action for a Better World for Girls?
If you, like me, have been frustrated about what we can do to work towards ensuring a better world for girls and women, especially given the current socio/political environment, then please consider joining us at Girl Scouts of Connecticut Camp CEO this June. The Connecticut AAUW is working with the Connecticut Girl Scouts on several initiatives; and your support for this camp is important.
Every year for the past 9 years, successful women like you have joined us for this amazing 2 ½ day experience at our beautiful Camp Laurel in Lebanon, CT. There, we meet up with about 30 girls ages 14-17 for activities and programs that provide the girls with the opportunity to get hands-on leadership learning, coupled with access to extraordinary women role models, like you.
In the past, we have guided the girls as they created new businesses, learned to do Ted Talks, learned to market and brand, developed new products, prepared gourmet feasts and just had good old fashioned fun riding horses, swimming, boating, doing crafts, archery and singing around the campfire.
This year, Camp CEO will begin on Thursday, June 28 at 5 p.m. and will conclude on Saturday, June 30 at 3 p.m. Accommodations for women will be in our platform tents and all meals will be provided. There is no cost to participate, but the Girl Scouts always appreciate any voluntary donations made by the women to help defray the costs of the program.
If you have an interest in attending, please contact Mary Barneby, CEO, Connecticut Girl Scouts, MBarneby@gsofct.org. She would be happy to speak with you in more detail to answer any questions. If you are unable to attend but know an accomplished woman professional who might have an interest, please don’t hesitate to pass this on to her. We look to having successful women from all professional sectors, geographic parts of the state and with diverse backgrounds and ethnicity.
Take a look at the below video to see what the girls and women are saying about Camp CEO! We know that not only do the girls leave inspired and motivated, but we women also leave with hope for the future and with lasting friendships with the girls and one another.
Know Your Rights: Workplace Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VII is a federal law that prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion, and it applies to employers with 15 or more employees, including federal, state, and local governments. Even with Title VII’s protections, many people across the country still face sexual harassment in their workplaces.

Deeper in Debt
Student loan debt is now a $1.3-trillion problem burdening 44 million borrowers. Experts are talking about the effects of student debt on the economy, but they aren’t talking about its disproportionate effects on women. AAUW takes a close look at that oversight in the new research report Deeper in Debt: Women and Student Loans. Register for the livestream launch event on May 24 or be the first to know when the report is released.
